Unearthed and Exposed

In 2010, I was artist in residence at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, exploring memories of Elmfield House. During this residency I explored the site using alternative photography techniques. After photographing the house and outbuildings, the negatives were buried within the gallery grounds. The surfaces of these negatives, eroded by the microbes in the soil and their time in the earth, resulted in photographs being etched with the memories of the place. Inspired by Honiton’s history of lace making and working with the Lace Museum, I used hedgerow plants to recreate images of lace handkerchiefs in the juice of the flowers depicted within them – anthotypes of lace. Here is a link to obtain a Catalogue of the exhibition.
